The Compass Fellowship

We will provide free training and mentorship, and access to full-time, salaried job opportunities to guide you through the transition and help you ultimately land a fulfilling new job over the course of 12 weeks. You’ll join a cohort of 25 fellows from around the country. You must be available weekly training and mentorship sessions.

Do I need a college degree to apply?

No, you just need several years of experience in product or engineering roles.

Do I need to have experience working in political or advocacy work?

Not at all! We’ll provide training from experts in the field and a mentor who has already made the transition from tech to advocacy to help you along the way.

Where do I need to live to participate?

The Compass Fellowship will be prioritizing candidates in New York City, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Austin, but we will also select candidates from other states in the U.S. that might be open to remote work.

How much will this cost me?

Absolutely nothing! The training, mentorship, and access to job opportunities are all free.

Can I work while I’m doing the fellowship?

Yes, but you need to be planning to leave your job no later than June 26, 2020. You’ll need to be available for weekly remote trainings and peer-to-peer sessions via video chat for up to 12 weeks. We’ll align on time in the evenings that works best for the fellows. You’ll be interviewing between April - June 2020, and should plan to leave your current role once you have an offer during that 12-week period of time.

Do I need to relocate?

No, we will provide jobs that match locations with fellows or offer remote positions. You only need to relocate if you really want to.

What are the key dates for the fellowship?

The application deadline is March 30, 2020. Fellows will be selected in March 2020. Due to coronavirus, the fellowship convenes remotely on the weekend of April 4-5, 2020. After that, there will be weekly trainings and peer mentorship sessions for up to 12 weeks. We will work to place fellows in jobs until June 26, 2020.

How are fellows evaluated and selected?

The recruiting team will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. The best candidates will be selected for interviews and a brief exercise. Each candidate will be scored and the top 25 fellows will be selected to join the program.

Will I get paid?

We will only be referring fellows to full-time job placements at progressive organizations. Once you are hired, you will be paid by your employer.

The fellowship is designed to match the fellows with full-time, long-term job opportunities. We will set you up with interviews for job opportunities with our hiring organizations. Whether or not you receive a job offer will be dependent on your performance in the interview process. We will work with you throughout the duration of the fellowship to prepare you as well as connect you with job opportunities that are the right fit for your skill set so that you can land in a full-time role.

Will you sponsor my visa?

While Cultivate does not sponsor visas since we are not the employer, many of our hiring organizations do. It varies organization to organization based on their specific policies. If you have the right skillset for the fellowship, we encourage you to apply and we will help you find employers that can work with your personal situation.

What will the training entail?

The training program will focus on learning how to apply technical skills in a campaigning environment. For example, courses will walk through how political data is structured, the tools that are used in a campaign environment, and how to translate your experience in your resume. Courses will not focus on teaching coding.

What is the time commitment?

The time commitment is minimal, and the program is designed to be flexible for folks who already have a full-time job while they are looking to make a switch into political work. There will be an initial remote convening all day April 4-5th, and then fellows are expected to attend 2 virtual courses per week. The training will have a short weekly assignment that won't take much time to complete. Fellows will also be paired with hiring organizations for interviews, which they can schedule to fit their own schedules.
